Why Your Choice of Siding Matters

Colorado’s varied climate demands high-quality workmanship and the best materials. The temperature changes we experience can cause siding that is not properly installed to warp or degrade.

In some parts of the states, the extreme winter cold and snow require contractors to take extra care when selecting the materials and techniques they will use on a given building. Conversely, the extreme heat experienced in the high desert planes and San Juan Valley requires a different set of needs. These concerns to be fully understood when planning a job in Colorado’s varied geographic locations.

Explore Types of Siding

To meet all of your needs, Colorado Siding carries a full line of siding solutions. Please read about your various options below.

Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement siding is the newest, and in our opinion, the best type of siding on the market today. It is durable, low maintenance, and a certified green product. Whether you living in the mountains, the city, or the plains, fiber cement siding should be examined as an option for your siding needs. Colorado Siding is a preferred provider of James Hardie® Siding for the State of Colorado.

Fiber Cement Siding Aesthetics

Fiber cement siding is better than vinyl or aluminum at emulating natural wood grain. In some cases, it is visually indistinguishable from certain types of wood siding. Great detail work can be achieved with fiber cement siding, including trim detail.

Fiber Cement Siding Benefits

Fiber cement siding is durable in all weather conditions. It is finished and installed like wood siding but generally comes primed or prefinished. Additionally, wood rot, insect damage, and maintenance headaches are not issues for fiber cement siding. Also, fiber cement siding is woodpecker-proof. For homes in the mountains with possible fire danger, fiber cement siding is the ideal choice because it is noncombustible. In many cases where forest fires have occurred, the only homes left standing are those with fiber cement siding.

Fiber Cement Siding Pricing

Fiber cement siding is a medium-priced product, but the lifetime costs, once the installation is complete, are very minimal, with painting required very infrequently.

Fiber Cement Siding Maintenance

Lastly, fiber cement siding is almost maintenance-free. James Hardie® offers a 30 year limited, transferable warranty and a 15-year warranty on the paint finish. Additionally, no preparation work is normally required before repainting fiber cement siding as the material is nonexpansive and does not hold water. Therefore, the paint does not flake or crack.

 Vinyl Siding in Colorado

Vinyl siding is a low-cost, low-maintenance siding option for Colorado homes. Resulting from frustration with wood and metal sidings vinyl was developed in the 1950s. Throughout Colorado, vinyl siding is an inexpensive choice to cover your home, garage, or other outbuildings. At Colorado Siding, we install a large volume of vinyl siding, but generally recommend that your home value does not exceed $250,000 when considering this option. Simply put, the resale value of more expensive homes can be impacted by vinyl siding.

Vinyl Siding Aesthetics

Vinyl siding comes in several shapes, colors, and textures. While it can be made to emulate wood or fiber cement siding in color and texture, it is sometimes also used in more outlandish manners and a range of colors.

Vinyl Siding Benefits & Drawbacks

Vinyl siding has absolutely no maintenance and is very energy efficient. Vinyl siding is often installed over damaged wood siding. While acceptable, this must be done with extreme care. If moisture is trapped below the vinyl the wood can rot causing damage and defeating the whole purpose of the siding.  Additionally, Vinyl also could crack when impacted in cold weather. Therefore, this makes it less than ideal for most of the Colorado mountains.

Vinyl Siding Price

Vinyl generally costs less than other forms of siding and is a good choice for those on a budget. In fact, modern vinyl siding has come a long way and now has premium-looking colors that will work for any budget.

Vinyl Siding Maintenance

The maintenance concerns with vinyl siding are limited. Fading can occur in the harsh Colorado sun.  Also, cracks can also occur requiring that the siding be repaired or replaced.

Wood Siding

Wood is the original siding material for homes. Colorado buildings that weren’t built of brick were originally covered in wooden siding. You can still see many of these historic homes throughout the state. From the beautiful Victorian designs of Silverton and Glenwood Springs to the vintage homes in downtown Golden and even the occasional original building in Denver, well-maintained wooden siding certainly stands the test of time.

Wood Siding Aesthetics

Wood siding comes in a variety of shapes and textures and can obviously be painted any color desired.Beveled or clapboard siding is built on overlapping joints. Plywood siding called T-111 is many times used as an alternative to actual wood-grain siding.

Wood Siding Benefits & Drawbacks

While wood siding is easy to repair it is difficult to install over other types of siding. While generally considered most beautiful, wood requires the extra step of painting or staining once installed. Rot, warping, splitting, woodpeckers, and insects can potentially damage wood siding. Fire danger in wood rural Colorado is always a major concern for those who choose wood siding.

Wood Siding Price

Price can vary greatly depending on wood types, cuts, and finishes. Generally speaking, wood siding will be the most expensive of all residing products. Maintenance costs should be figured into the lifetime price.

Wood Siding Maintenance

Significant amounts of work are necessary to prepare wood siding for standard maintenance. Homes that are not well ventilated can cause problems with siding. A lower maintenance option is to stain the wood.

Engineered Wood Siding for Colorado

We use LP SmartSide and LP Diamond Kote built-on siding as our engineered siding of choice. These siding products are engineered to be as powerful as steel or fiber cement but as lovely as real wood. Engineered wood is a great siding option in Colorado.

LP SmartSide Aesthetics

Since LP Smartside is made from real wood ingredients–it mimics the look of real wood perfectly. Also, LP Smartside comes in 30 gorgeous color offerings including the distinctive high-end look of Diamond Kote.

LP SmartSide Benefits & Drawbacks

By far the most attractive part of LP Smartside is the high-end function you get at a price that is lower than a premium product like fiber cement. You get the impact resistance you need living in Colorado and a comprehensive warranty. While LP Smartside does provide an hour of fire-resistance, there are other products rated higher and LP Smartside’s resistance to termites is low.

Engineered Wood Siding Price

LP SmartSide engineered wood siding will last longer than a budget siding like vinyl. LP Smartside is more expensive than Vinyl for this reason. It is less expensive than fiber cement siding options but also has less resistance to termites and fire than its competitor.

Engineered Wood Siding Maintenance

Compared to something like wood, LP SmartSide is relatively low maintenance. This includes washing the siding to rid it of dust build-up. Also, touching up small chips occasionally. These can be done by the homeowner but more specialize maintenance here and there, like replacing caulking on damaged pieces may require a siding repair specialist.
