When you start researching new siding for your Fort Collins home you will begin to see there is a lot more than just lap siding to choose from.  Although definitely the most common type of siding and one that people are familiar with–there are many other siding styles to choose from.  Many of these styles will be used along with lap siding to achieve an overall look all your own.  But first, you must know what type of siding styles you like the best.  Below is a guide to siding styles, including lap siding, to help you get a feel for what you may want on your home.

What is Lap Siding?

Lap siding is a type of exterior wall cladding that can be installed horizontally on the outside surfaces of your home. When it’s being placed, the planks are overlaid one over another and this overlap creates what we know as “lap” in construction terms. There are actually several different types of styles to choose from when installing lap siding such as Dutch Lap and Horizontal Lap but the two most popular ones among homeowners are traditional Clapboard (or and Beaded Style.

Siding Styles That Go Well With Lap

  • Board and Batten: Board and batten siding is a traditional type of exterior wall that has been around for centuries. It consists of two parts: boards, which are long pieces with gaps; and the overlying battens, small strips found in-between every board to conceal the spaces between them. The contrast between traditional lap and board and batten can be a striking combination and great for adding a modern twist to an older Fort Collins home.
  • Shakes:  Shake siding has become popular over time for its natural texture and look which offers homes warmth and authenticity.  It is a great way to add a more textured element to contrast the straight lines of lap siding.  This combination is very traditional but can also be used on modern Fort Collins homes.
  • Scallop: Scallop siding is a great way to add that distinctive touch to any home while also accentuating the appearance of your property. With half-round shingles, you can create something truly unique.  This is especially true when the curves of these types of shingles are used in harmony with the straight lines of lap siding. This is a visually powerful combination that is sure to make your home’s exterior turn heads.
