One question that we get asked fairly often here at Colorado Siding is How do I care for or maintain my home’s siding? If you live in Broomfield, your home’s siding may be subject to things that homeowners in other parts of the country don’t have to worry about, like uv exposure, pests, rain, and winter weather. Furthermore, the type of siding you have also determines what maintenance may or may not be required and how often. In this post, we’ll discuss the different requirements for taking care of common types of siding including cedar/wood, vinyl, and fiber cement.
Cedar/wood siding
Cedar/wood siding is especially popular in Colorado homes because of its cabin like look and feel. The downside of having wood siding is that it requires more maintenance than other options. Wood/cedar siding should be cleaned once a year using warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Rust and mildew spots may require special removal techniques. Also, wood siding can fade over time and may have to be restored occasionally in order to preserve its color. Products for this can usually be found at a local hardware store.
Vinyl siding
One of the benefits of having vinyl siding is that it’s easy to clean and maintain. Vinyl siding can be easily cleaned using a garden hose and gentle cleaner. Scrubbing off hard to remove spots is ok as long as you use a soft cloth and don’t apply too much pressure. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive brushes or scrapers. You should also avoid painting vinyl as it doesn’t adhere well to new paint. The downside of having vinyl is that it can be easily dented, in which case professional repairs may be necessary.
Fiber cement
Fiber cement siding is perhaps the best choice when it comes to low maintenance siding. It’s resistant to rot, fading, moisture, fire, and pests, which makes it highly durable. Just like vinyl siding, it can be easily cleaned using water and gentle cleaners. Fiber cement siding should be inspected annually to identify any cracks or holes that need repairs. If you do find an area that needs mending, it can usually be fixed fairly easily with just a little bit of caulk.
